Efavir is an antiviral drug that inhibits the replication of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cells within the body. It is utilized in the treatment of HIV, which is responsible for acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Efavirenz is not a cure for HIV or AIDS. Additionally, Efavir may have other applications not detailed in this medication guide.
The use of Efavir can lead to severe psychiatric effects such as confusion, intense depression, suicidal thoughts, aggression, extreme anxiety, hallucinations, or atypical behavior. Immediately inform your doctor if you experience any of these side effects, even if they have occurred before.
Do not use Efavir without first consulting your doctor if you are pregnant, as it may be harmful to the fetus. While taking Efavir and for at least 12 weeks after treatment, use two forms of contraception, which should include a barrier method (like a condom or diaphragm with spermicide). Notify your doctor if you become pregnant during the course of treatment.
Avoid taking Efavir in conjunction with cisapride, pimozide, midazolam, triazolam, or ergot medications, such as dihydroergotamine (D.H.E. 45), ergonovine, ergotamine, or methylergonovine. The combination of these drugs with Efavir could result in life-threatening side effects.
Several other medications may interact with Efavir or diminish its effectiveness. Inform your doctor about all prescription and over-the-counter medicines you are using. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal supplements, and medications prescribed by other healthcare providers. Do not initiate any new medication without notifying your doctor.
Taking Efavir does not prevent the transmission of HIV to others. Consult with your doctor about safe practices for reducing HIV transmission during sexual activity. Sharing drug or medication needles is never safe, even for healthy individuals.
Possible side effects include mild nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea or constipation; cough; blurred vision; headache, dizziness, fatigue; trouble concentrating, balance or coordination issues; muscle or joint discomfort; sleep disturbances (insomnia), unusual dreams; or alterations in the shape or distribution of body fat (particularly in the arms, legs, face, neck, breasts, and waist).
